These Are The Most-Downloaded Apps So Far In 2022

These Are The Most-Downloaded Apps So Far In 2022

Whether they’re providing a service like ride-sharing or acting as a mere source of entertainment, mobile apps have become an integral part of many peoples’ day-to-day lives.

But which apps are most popular among users?

In the graphic below, Visual Capitalist’s Carmen Ang uses data from a recent report by Sensor Tower to show the top 10 most downloaded apps around the world in Q1 2022 from the Google Play and Apple App Store.

Social Reigns Supreme

According to the report, total app downloads reached 36.9 billion in Q1 2022, a 1.4% increase compared to Q1 2021.

A majority of the top 10 most downloaded apps were social media platforms, with Meta and ByteDance owning six of the top 10.

Meta’s four platforms on the list are Instagram, Facebook, WhatsApp, and Messenger, while ByteDance owns TikTok and video-editing platform CapCut.

Just outside the top 10 are Zoom and WhatsApp Business (yet another Meta-owned app).

TikTok’s Winding Road to the Top

In Q1 2021, TikTok exceeded 3.5 billion all-time downloads, becoming the fifth app (and the first non-Meta app) to reach this milestone. This is impressive considering the app has been banned in India as of June 2020. Prior to the ban, India accounted for 30% of TikTok’s downloads.

India’s not the only country that’s banned the use of TikTok. Pakistan has blocked TikTok multiple times because of concerns over “inappropriate” content. However, it’s worth noting that the bans in Pakistan only lasted a few days before being lifted, and currently, Pakistanis are able to access the platform.

Top 10 Highest Grossing Apps

TikTok isn’t just the most downloaded app in the world—it’s also the highest-grossing non-game app, based on Q1 2022 revenue from the App Store and Google Play:

TikTok generated an impressive $821 million in consumer spending in the last quarter. The video-sharing platform was the top-grossing app on the App Store, and the second-highest-grossing on Google Play, coming just after Google One.

While none of Meta’s platforms made it onto the top 10 list for gross revenue, these platforms make a ton of money that doesn’t necessarily flow through app stores. In 2021, Meta generated more than $117.9 billion in revenue, with over 97% of that coming from ads.

Growth’s on the Horizon

The pandemic had a massive impact on the app market.

In 2020, app spending on things like premium access, in-app purchases, and subscriptions surged by 30% year-over-year to reach $111 billion.

And while COVID-19 restrictions are easing in most places around the world, app spending isn’t likely to taper off anytime soon. By 2025, spending is expected to grow to $270 billion.

US Says China Would Face Sanctions Similar To Russia For Invading Taiwan

US Says China Would Face Sanctions Similar To Russia For Invading Taiwan

Authored by Dave DeCamp via AntiWar.com,

On Wednesday, Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen said that the US would be ready to use sanctions similar to what has been imposed on Russia against China if Beijing were to invade Taiwan.

Yellen told the House Financial Services Committee that she believes the US has shown it can impose significant economic pain. “I think you should not doubt our ability and resolve to do the same in other situations,” she said.

A prior trip to China, via Reuters.

Deputy Secretary of State Wendy Sherman also testified before the Committee and warned that the US would impose harsh sanctions on China if it helped Russia in its war in Ukraine. “It gives President Xi, I think, a pretty good understanding of what might come his way should he, in fact, support Putin in any material fashion,” she said.

China has strongly denied US claims that it was considering giving Russia military support. Last month, US officials told media outlets that Moscow had asked Beijing for help. But US officials told NBC News this week that the claim “lacked hard evidence.”

US officials have also warned that Washington would take action against Beijing if it helped Russia avoid Western sanctions. Over the past few years, the US has imposed a series of sanctions and export controls against Beijing, but they have not been as harsh as what Russia is facing.

While Washington is warning Beijing it could impose tougher sanctions, such measures could do serious damage to the US economy since it is so intertwined with China’s.

For now, Yellen said that the US shouldn’t sanction China for its relationship with Russia. “We would be very concerned if they were to supply weapons to Russia, or to try to evade the sanctions that we’ve put in place on the Russian financial system and the central bank,” she said. “We don’t see that happening at this point.”

Morgan Stanley Fears Soaring Lithium Prices Could Spark Demand Destruction For EVs

Morgan Stanley Fears Soaring Lithium Prices Could Spark Demand Destruction For EVs

Prices of lithium carbonate, a key ingredient in the manufacturing of electric vehicle batteries, have jumped so significantly over the past year that EV manufacturers are beginning to raise vehicle costs. Morgan Stanley points out that demand destruction could be possible if EV prices increase too much in response to soaring commodity prices.

Morgan Stanley’s Jack Lu told clients Thursday that the cost of lithium carbonate has jumped fivefold over the past year. Bloomberg data shows lithium carbonate per ton costs around $74k.

Lu said that because of high lithium carbonate prices, EV manufacturers are set to raise vehicle prices by as much as 15%, which could hurt demand as the cost of ‘going green’ gets more expensive.

“Historically, the battery price cost curve had been declining at a pace of 3% to 7% annually for so many years in a row it almost seemed inevitable.

“But molecules don’t play by the same rules as Moore’s Law. The world has changed, and along with it is a new paradigm of input costs,” Lu said.

The analyst said lithium demand outstrips supply.

“The price explosion tells you that lithium supply is simply nowhere near enough to feed this demand surge,” OilPrice.com reported.

And it’s not just lithium. Nickel, another critical metal for lithium-ion batteries, surged in recent weeks, making the overall cost of batteries more expensive.

Tesla has raised vehicle prices twice this month in response to soaring commodity prices. Tesla also raised prices for its megapack battery.

To counter some of the costs, Tesla recently announced some of its vehicles would use cheaper iron-phosphate battery cells.

According to Kelley Blue Book, EVs cost an average of $56,437, much higher than the average new combustion engine car. Rising commodity prices will only make EVs more out of reach for average Americans as the Biden administration continues pushing its going green agenda.
